Why Malachi Corley’s College Experience Shaped Jet Starts

2024 has been a disaster for the New York Jets. So much so that their head coach and day-to-day manager are no longer employed by the organization.

With a new regime expected to come in, it could leave many young players wondering about their status going forward. In the case of third-round rookie Malachi Corley, he’s not worried about his lack of touches in his first season with the Jets.

It’s simply the exact same thing that happened when he was a standout in college.

“It kind of reminds me of my history at Western Kentucky,” Corley said on the team’s website. “My first year there, I didn’t get many opportunities, which is pretty similar to my story here. I’ve really just taken everything with a grain of salt and learned that ultimately it’s God’s plan.

“If I’m going to sit behind guys and wait my turn, it’s probably for a good reason. Just because I’m a young, talented person coming into the league doesn’t mean I know all the ins and outs of how you play football. Sitting behind guys who are at different points in their careers and who are great players has given me the opportunity to really learn and grow.”

Corley thrived in college as he was dubbed the “YAC King” for his ability to score in whatever position the offense had him in.

With New York, touches have been hard to come by. He apparently recorded a touchdown in the team’s 21-13 win over the Houston Texans, but he dropped the ball at the goal line before crossing the end zone.

On the season, Corley has recorded three receptions for 16 yards. While a new regime will have to decide if Corley should move on, the rookie still believes he has something to offer this current roster and in the future.
