Tim Allen compared his immediate success returning to television after over 10 years to Tom Brady returning to football after retirement.

Tim Allen is getting ready to return to television and he feels Tom Brady will return to football after retirement.

“I still think about LAST MAN STANDING,” Allen told US Weekly. “They did that for nine years, and now I feel like Tom Brady. I’m doing another one.”

After Allen’s first show, HOME IMPROVEMENT, ended in 1999, Allen was first seen on television in 2011 when he took over the lead role on LAST MAN STANDING, which ran until 2021. The next year, he reprized his role as Santa when Disney rolled THE SANTA The CAUSE movie franchise into an original show for Disney+. Now he’s looking forward to his fourth show, SHIFTING GEARS, which will follow a similar format to his first two.

“I am very grateful to work and to be able to entertain. It’s what I love to do,” Allen saidadding of his new show, “It’s been an amazing experience. Our pilot killed (it), so they’ve ordered a season and we’ve been shooting it for about four days.”

Like his other shows, SHIFTING GEARS is about a family and the funny, crazy circumstances of life.

Allen stars as Matt, “a widowed owner of an auto restoration shop and his attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter (Kat Dennings), who moves into Matt’s home with her two teenage children.”

Other actors include Seann William Scott as Gabriel, “a family friend who works at Matt’s shop,” and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, “an ex-Marine who works as a mechanic for Matt. Maxwell Simkins plays Riley’s children (and Matt’s grandchildren) and newcomers Barrett Margolis.”

Allen’s emphasis on family experiences comes from being part of a large family in real life.

“I have been defined by a very large, large family. My wife Jane has a big family and now we have two (children),” Allen said. “My life has been defined by my family. Every story I do on stage doing comedy for 40 years (and my) stand-up is really centered around my family.”

SHIFTING GEARS will be released in early 2025.
