George Russell took a sensational pole position in Las Vegas and the Mercedes seemed to come alive in the cooler evening conditions. But there was plenty of wrangling at the back, with Ferrari managing to out-qualify their McLaren rivals, while Max Verstappen starts ahead of Lando Norris.   • Russell has three poles this year – Canada, Britain and now Las Vegas. This was his fourth career pole position.

  • Carlos Sainz qualified second for the second consecutive year here, although last year he earned a 10-place grid drop. He has missed pole here twice by a total of 0.142s.

  • This is the Spaniard’s second front row start in the last three races after winning from pole in Mexico City.

  • Pierre Gasly finished third after Esteban Ocon started fourth in Sao Paulo. Gasly has only one other top-three start in his career, back in Qatar in 2021, but he started fourth here last year.

  • Charles Leclerc was fourth, but his last two wins came from P4 on the grid at both Monza and Austin.
