Snow arrives in WNC, forcing many schools to close: Find out the latest

Snow began to fall overnight on November 22, and by morning some parts of western North Carolina had snow on the ground, forcing schools to change their schedules.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect until 6 p.m. 7 a.m. Nov. 23 for higher elevations where accumulating snow and slick, icy roads are expected.

The snow forced a few WNC schools to close, including Buncombe County (distance learning), Asheville City Schools (distance learning), Haywood County, Madison County, Swain County and Jackson County schools. Many other schools were on a two-hour delay, but that could change.

According to the WLOS forecast, some snow is likely in the higher elevations above 3,500 feet near Tennessee. Asheville could see showers for a light dusting. Expect wind chills in the 10s and 20s Friday morning.

It will also be windy again this afternoon with gusts in the 30 to 40 mph range.

The coldest air of the season ends the work week and begins the weekend.

This is the latest forecast:

Friday: Partly to mostly cloudy, windy and cold. Showers at times. Highs in the lower 40s.

Saturday: Cloudy early, then more sun in the afternoon. Less windy and milder. Highs in the lower 50s.
