It’s getting cold in Knoxville and East Tennessee.

A cold front is sweeping across the United States, which is expected to bring winter-like temperatures to the region later this week. East Tennessee will experience chills in the 20s and upper teens on Nov. 22, according to the National Weather Service.

The big question on everyone’s mind: Is it going to snow? How much new snow could East Tennessee see Thursday and Friday?

Will it snow in Knoxville and East Tennessee?

There is a chance of snow in the forecast for East Tennessee this week beginning Nov. 21, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Knoxville: No. There is a 30% chance of rain on November 21, but snow has been removed from the forecast.
  • Morristown: Yes. There is a 60% chance of rain and snow showers on the night of November 21st
  • Tri-Cities: Yes. The forecast shows a “slight” chance of rain and snow during the afternoon of November 21. There is a “probable” chance of rain and snow on the night of November 21. The possibility of rain and snow showers continues into the morning at Friday 22 Nov.
  • Gatlinburg: Yes. There is a 70% chance of rain and snow on the night of November 21st. Friday morning, November 22, there is a chance of rain and snow showers before
  • Chattanooga: There is no chance of snow.

When is it going to snow?

Across East Tennessee, the best chance for snow will occur Thursday evening, November 21st. In some places, these snow showers could continue until early Friday morning, November 22, although the chances are less. A Winter Weather Advisory will be in place for the easternmost Tennessee communities through the night of November 21st.

A wind advisory may also be in place for communities in East Tennessee.

How much snow falls in East Tennessee?

From November 21 to 23, the National Weather Service is predicting up to three inches of snow in parts of Northeast Tennessee. High elevations may see measurable snow, according to the National Weather Service.

  • Knoxville: No snow forecast
  • Morristown: less than half an inch
  • La Follette: less than half an inch
  • Tazewell: less than half an inch
  • Sunshine: half an inch
  • Kingsport: 0.5 to 1 inch
  • Oneida: 0.5 to 1 inch
  • Gatlinburg: 0.5 to 1 inch
  • Greenville: 1 inch
  • Mountain City: 3 inches

Will this be Tennessee’s first snow of the season?

No. The Smokies saw their first snowfall of the season on October 15th. Parts of the Great Smoky Mountains saw up to three inches of snow that day.
