Ground beef E. coli recall involves Detroit-based Wolverine Packing

Wolverine Packing Co., a Detroit-based meat company, is recalling approximately 167,277 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday.

Fresh products that have a “use by date” of 11/14/24, frozen products that are labeled with a production date of 10/22/24, as well as products with the bear company number “EST.2574B” are all subject to the recall, officials say.

FSIS is urging restaurants not to serve these products and says the meat should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS was notified by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture of a group of ill people who had reported eating ground beef prior to their illness on November 13.

FSIS later determined that there was a connection between ground meat products at Wolverine Packing Co. and this disease cluster.

To date, 15 case patients have been identified with disease. FSIS said it will continue to work with the Minnesota Departments of Agriculture and Health on the investigation.

E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps, officials said.
