Josh Brolin will ‘quit acting’ if Denis Villeneuve is snubbed at the Oscars

Josh Brolin is threatening to walk away from Hollywood if his “Dune: Part Two” director Denis Villeneuve is snubbed again in the Best Director category.

Brolin, who previously talked about Villeneuve not being nominated for the first “Dune” film in 2022, told Black that he will “quit acting” if the Academy does not recognize Villeneuve for the sequel.

“If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll stop acting,” Brolin said. “It was a better film than the first. When I saw it, it felt like my brain had been ripped open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Oscars have any meaning, they recognize him.”

Villeneuve will be celebrated at the 2024 IndieWire Honors and is set to receive the Director’s Tribute at the Gotham Awards. Of course, the Oscar nominations won’t be known until they are revealed in early 2025.

“Dune” previously landed the second-highest number of nominations at the 94th Academy Awards with 10 nods, but best director was not one of them.

Brolin said in one Twitter video that it was “incredible, almost numbing, flummoxing” that Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director.

“It’s just one of those things where you go, ‘Huh?’ What?!’” Brolin said. “I don’t know how you get 10 nominations and then the guy who did the impossible with that book doesn’t get nominated. It makes you realize that it’s all great, and then it’s all fucking stupid. So congratulations on the amazing achievements that these incredibly talented people have been recognized for, because it’s all really, really stupid.”

Villeneuve recently told Black that, however, he does not control functions for reasons of prices.

“As a filmmaker, you’re a lone wolf. When your work is appreciated by the community, it feels like you’re part of a family. That’s what really matters to me,” said Villeneuve. “Making films means be away from your family for several months. Every time I finish a film, I sit down and ask myself if the flame is still there, because I never want to make a film without that fire inside me.”

He added that Amy Adams should have been nominated for an Oscar for her turn in his 2016 sci-fi film “Arrival,” and said the snub was a “huge disappointment.” However, Villeneuve was nominated for Best Director for the film.
