Heartbreaking bodycam footage of Laken Riley’s family finding out she was murdered played in court as killer sentenced to life without parole

The family of slain nursing student Laken Riley can be seen overcome with grief as they learned of her death in heartbreaking police body cam video played before the sentencing of her killer, Jose Ibarra, on Wednesday.

The clip starts with the family’s black pickup truck accidentally pulling over to the side of the road as they approach a group of police officers.

“That’s my daughter,” her mother, Allyson Phillips, repeats as she breaks down in tears before collapsing on the side of the road, overcome with grief.

Her stepfather John Phillips and sister Lauren, who were in the truck with Allyson, also begin sobbing and frantically start pacing the area, clearly unable to process what happened.

Lauren squats down near her mother, who can barely contain herself.

As Allyson begins to hyperventilate and grabs the biceps of a nearby officer, barely stifling a plaintive “is she alive?”

When the officer tells her that he is unable to tell her, she falls back on the grip and grabs her face with both hands before rolling limply onto her side, knowing in her heart that her world has turned crushed.

“That’s what they endured and that’s how it was that day when they came here to look for their daughter,” prosecutor Sheila Ross said after showing the heartbreaking 60-second clip of the family bawling in the courtroom as they saw.

After watching the clip and hearing statements from several of Riley’s friends and family, Judge Patrick Haggard sentenced Ibarra to life in prison without parole for the brutal 2024 slaying.
