Richard Gere scolded by Savannah Guthrie after making ‘obscene gesture’ live on Today

Richard Gere got a stern talking to after turning Savannah Guthrie off at the start of his interview on the Today show.

Just a day after legendary singer Cher dropped an F-bomb on the NBC show, chaos once again erupted at the network — this time with the Pretty Woman actor, 75, causing chaos with an ‘obscene’ gesture.

The program quickly derailed when the program aired a clip of Richard starring in his new political thriller, The Agency.

However, producers cut the scene before A-lister’s character Bosko gave the middle finger, so Richard took matters into his own hands and played the moment live in Studio 1A.

When Savannah introduced him to viewers, Richard proudly turned her away, leaving her completely shocked.

Richard defended the move, saying: “Sorry, but that’s what I did in the play.”

A stunned Savannah immediately tried to hide Richard’s hand with her script as she declared that she ‘bleed’ him.

“You just made an obscene gesture on this family morning show,” she said.

“You know Cher was here and made an F-bomb yesterday, so I don’t know what’s going on.”

‘No, no, no, no, no,’ Richard interjected, clarifying that his gesture was merely a re-enactment of the clip that the show had previewed.

“That’s what the clip was, but we cut that part out,” Savannah shot.

“I could see it, but it didn’t make sense without it,” Richard continued.

At this point, Savannah began to salvage the chat and get the interview back on track.

“So this was the first time you saw it, though?” she asked, referring to the clip.

“I haven’t seen anything, no,” replied her guest. ‘It’s the first I’ve seen it.’

Savannah probed, ‘Why is that?

‘Because you’re going to the premiere tomorrow night, but you don’t like watching your work?’

Richard replied: ‘I don’t like looking in the mirror, to tell you the truth.

‘I don’t much care to see myself.’

Richard stars alongside Michael Fassbender and Jodie Turner-Smith in the new Paramount Plus thriller, which has been produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov.

The show will be released on November 29 and takes place in the department responsible for training and handling deep-cover agents on long-term missions, who live under false identities for years, with the aim of identifying and recruiting intelligence sources.

“It’s amazing,” Richard said of the series. “We shot it like a movie.”
