Toothless, Hiccup in Live Action

Hiccup and Toothless are finally in live-action for the first time ever.

Universal Studios has released the first trailer for its live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon,” following the popular DreamWorks Animation trilogy released in the 2010s. The new film will be in theaters on June 13.

The live-action version features many of the original characters played by new faces. Among these are Mason Thames (“The Black Phone”) as Hiccup, Nico Parker (“Dumbo,” “The Last of Us”) as Astrid and Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”) as Fishlegs Ingerman. Gerard Butler plays Hiccup’s father Stoick the Vast, after voicing the character in the animated trilogy.

The trailer introduces Hiccup, Stoick and Toothless, who look exactly like their animated counterparts. As part of his Viking training, Hiccup is instructed to go out and slay a dragon, but instead he befriends the adorable dragon Toothless.

Dean DeBlois, who wrote and directed all three animated “How to Train Your Dragon” films, has the same responsibility for the live-action film. The DreamWorks films included the original “How to Train Your Dragon” in 2010, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” in 2014 and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” in 2019. Based on the book series by Cressida Cowell, the films follow a young man named Hiccup who stumbles across a captured, wounded dragon, whom he befriends, trains and eventually names Toothless. The story takes place on the Isle of Berk, which is home to a group of Vikings. The franchise also includes three television series, theme parks and a live show, “How to Train Your Dragon on Ice.” Overall, the series has generated more than $1.6 billion worldwide.
