Edmonton Oilers claim Kasperi Kapanen off waivers

The Edmonton Oilers has claimed Finnish forward Kasperi Kapanen off waivers from St. Louis Blues Tuesday.

Kapanen is currently on a one-year, $1 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Kapanen has scored one goal in 10 games this season while averaging 11:19 minutes of ice time.

St. Louis claimed Kapenen off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins last season. The 28-year-old tallied his least productive season with at least 40 games played as he had just six goals and 16 assists for 22 points in 73 games during the 2023-24 campaign.

Kapanen was selected No. 22 overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2014 NHL Draft, but he never played a game for them before being dealt to Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2015 offseason as part of the return for Phil Kessel. After making his debut the following season, he played parts of five seasons for the Leafs before being sent back to the Penguins in the 2020 offseason. He spent parts of three seasons in Pittsburgh before being placed on waivers and claimed by the Blues, entering his third season in St. Louis.

Throughout his career, the Finnish native has scored 85 goals and 124 assists for 209 points in 470 games over parts of 10 seasons with the Blues, Penguins and Maple Leafs.

Edmonton is currently 9-8-2 and is in fifth place in the Pacific Division. The Oilers will host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, the Minnesota Wild on Thursday and the New York Rangers on Saturday.
