Nancy Mace proposes banning transgender people from using Capitol Hill restrooms

South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace has introduced a proposal to ban transgender people from using Capitol Hill restrooms that align with their gender identity.
“A member, delegate, resident, officer, or employee of the House may not use a single-sex facility (including a restroom, locker room, or changing room) in the Capitol or House Office Buildings, except those corresponding to the biological sex of such person,” it says in the Mace proposal.
“Biological men do not belong in private women’s spaces. Period. Period. End of story,” Mace wrote on X.

The proposal specifically targets Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware, who is set to make history as the first transgender member of Congress when she takes office in January.
Under the bill, the sergeant-at-arms would be responsible for implementing these restrictions.
While Mace says the ban is significant, arguing that “allowing ‘biological males in single-sex facilities … threatens the safety and dignity of female Members, officers and staff of Parliament'”, research shows that there is no some factual basis for such restrictions.
Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that transgender people using facilities that match their gender identity pose any safety risk.
When confronted online about the bill targeting McBride, Mace confirmed, “Yes and then some.”
She added: “Also, Sarah McBride gets no say here. I will always protect women and girls.”
When reporters on Capitol Hill questioned the enforcement methods of the Sergeant-at-Arms, Mace responded that “biological men should not be in women’s private spaces. End of story.”
“This is about real women and women’s rights and the far left radical left, they want to erase women and women’s rights.”
In response, McBride characterized the bill as “a blatant attempt by far-right extremists to distract from the fact that there are no real solutions to what Americans are facing.”
“We should be focused on reducing the cost of housing, health care and child care, not manufacturing culture wars. Delawareans sent me here to make the American Dream more affordable and accessible, and that’s what I’m focused on,” she wrote. on X.
