UK weather live: More snow on the horizon as temperatures drop amid Met Office warning

UK braces for ‘disturbing snow’, ice and cold temperatures

More snow has been forecast to fall across parts of the UK as temperatures drop and the Met Office issues more weather forecasts.

Snow dusted areas across Scotland in Aberdeenshire as well as the Cairngorms on Monday. It also covered Mt Ingleborough, while frost covered berries in bushes near Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales.

Cold temperatures, ice and further snow are in the forecast for the coming days in what the Met Office deemed the country’s “first taste of winter”.

Yellow national severe weather warnings for snow and ice are currently in place until Wednesday, affecting parts of Scotland, all of Northern Ireland and parts of northern England, northern Wales and the northern Midlands.

The forecasters added that updates to the warnings were likely to be issued during the week, as they warned of travel delays due to the snow.

Disruptive snow is expected to fall on Tuesday morning, affecting morning rush hour commuters, the Met Office said. Rail companies have also warned passengers that their journeys are likely to be disrupted in the coming days.

Rail travel is likely to be disrupted

As more snow is expected to fall in parts of the UK, rail companies are warning passengers that their journeys could be disrupted.

TransPennine Express has allowed customers to use tickets bought for tonight or tomorrow Wednesday instead if they want to change their travel plans due to the weather forecast.

Northern told passengers that Network Rail teams were on standby as they advised customers that the weather may cause some disruption.

What is ‘anticyclonic gloom’ and why does it make the weather so dull and dreary?

The Met Office offered an explanation for why Britain is being gripped by gray fog and mist, which has seen people voice their frustration at the gloomy weather.

In a post on social media platform X, the Met Office explained what the term meant.

The forecaster said: “This can occur when high pressure traps a layer of moisture close to the Earth’s surface, bringing a prolonged period of dull and cloudy weather, with mist and fog also possible. How would you describe today’s weather?”

Will the weather clear this weekend?

As snow and freezing temperatures are pelted across the UK at the start of the week, the Met Office has predicted milder and wetter weather at the weekend

Forecasters said: “As we head towards the end of the week, it looks like there will be a rebound in temperatures with things becoming milder, wetter and possibly much windier over the weekend.”

The weather will be ‘much colder’ this week

With snow showers expected to fall clear on Monday evening, it is turning colder for much of Britain, the Met Office has said.

It revealed that daytime temperatures will be in the low single digits for most, potentially slightly less cold in the far south, although sub-zero temperatures are likely.

Despite the cold temperatures, there will be some sunshine away from the wintry showers near the coasts.

More snow is falling

More snow and ice is expected over the coming days, with temperatures dropping below average levels for the season.

“It’s going to be a very cold week,” Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said. “A few degrees below average both day and night in most of the country.”

It is expected that temperatures could drop to minus 2C in London on Friday, minus 4C in Birmingham and minus 7C further north.

There is an option for 15-20 cm (about 6-7.8in) of snow on the ground above 300 m (984 ft), 5–10 cm (about 2–4 in) in areas higher than 200 m (656 ft), with a “possibility” that snow could hit lower levels and cause road disruption – although the likelihood of that remains “uncertain”.

“There’s likely to be a widespread frost overnight as we get this colder air coming in from the arctic maritime air mass – cold air from the north pushing down across the country – which will be across the country by the middle of the week ,” Mrs. Maxey said.

Where has snow fallen so far?

Snow dusted grounds across Scotland on Monday, including at Glenshee Ski Center near Braemar and at Corgarff, both in Aberdeenshire, as well as along the A939 near The Lecht in the Cairngorms.

Snow also covered Mt Ingleborough, while frost covered berries on bushes near Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales.

Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey said snow has mostly fallen on hilltops so far on Monday – with 2cm falling in Lerwick, Shetland.
