New Jersey hospitals continue to rank highly nationally for better infection control and fewer medical errors in the latest semiannual report released Friday.

The Garden State landed fifth for the percentage of its 67 hospitals that received an A grade — 46.3% — from the nonprofit watchdog group Leapfrog. A list of New Jersey’s hospitals and their ratings is below.

Utah, Virginia, Connecticut and North Carolina ranked higher, while California, Rhode Island, Idaho, Pennsylvania and Colorado rounded out the top 10.

Safety standards have been rising steadily since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when safety measures were eased due to a tidal wave of patients seeking care and a health care workforce that began leaving bedside care in droves.

Infections from IV lines and catheters have dropped significantly since the pandemic, as have hard-to-treat infections that often occur during a longer hospital stay.

“Some hospitals are much better than others at protecting patients from harm,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

Based on data reported to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the grades include 30 safety measures, from bedsores and blood clots to patient falls and surgical errors.

Medical errors are considered a leading cause of death in the United States, but report claiming as many as 250,000 lives each year has created scrutiny.
