Forget package warnings: David Lynch takes the anti-smoking campaign into his own hands.

In one interview with People published Thursday, the “Twin Peaks” co-creator revealed that he needs supplemental oxygen to do anything more physically demanding than walking across a room.

“I really wanted to get this across: Think about it. You can stop doing these things that will end up killing you,” Lynch told the magazine. “I owe it to them — and to myself — to say that.”

The “Mulholland Drive” director revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with emphysema, a lung disease primarily caused by smoking, in 2020. Following the announcement in The magazine Syn og Soundhe X wrote: “There is a price to pay for this pleasure, and the price for me is emphysema.”

Despite its health concerns, Lynch told People that he doesn’t regret smoking. “It was important to me. I want what every addict wants: that what we love is good for us,” he said.

Lynch, whose projects often include characters holding a cigarette, revealed that he started smoking when he was just 8 years old, and quit just two years ago when he “saw the writing on the wall.”

“I loved the smell of tobacco, the taste of tobacco. I loved lighting cigarettes. That was part of being a painter and a filmmaker for me,” Lynch said.

Are cigarettes still in style?

The news that he is quitting comes as tobacco use continues to decline among young people. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control found that high school and middle school-aged children are consuming less tobacco than they have in a generation, driven in part by a decline in the use of e-cigarettes.

However, there is a rise in popularity of nicotine pouches such as Zyn, which rose to become the second most popular form of tobacco for children, investigation revealed.

Lynch testified about the difficulty of quitting after years of smoking. “When the going got tough, I wanted the first cigarette and it was a one-way trip to heaven,” he told People.
