Video of severe turbulence shows airline passengers being thrown against the cabin ceiling on the Miami flight

The moment a Miami-bound flight hit “severe turbulence” was captured on video, with objects and passengers thrown from their seats by the sudden drop.

On Thursday, Nov. 15, Scandinavian Airlines flight SK957 encountered turbulence over Greenland during the trip from Stockholm to Miami, a spokesperson for the airline told PEOPLE in a statement.

In the footage, originally sent to X (formerly Twitter)passengers could be heard screaming as those who apparently didn’t have their seat belts on were lifted from their seats, some hitting the ceiling of the plane’s cabin as debris flew ejecting the air.

According to the airline, 254 passengers were on board the flight and “no serious injuries were reported among passengers or crew.”

Passenger Sammy Solstad said so CNN that he felt lucky to be alive after experiencing the turbulence and that “everyone on the plane was begging and begging to just land instead of flying over the open ocean.”

The flight crew urged to return to Europe after the incident and eventually landed in Copenhagen as their safety protocols “require a thorough inspection of the aircraft” and “necessary facilities and personnel” were unavailable in Miami.

A woman sitting next to Solstad, who he said was not wearing a seat belt at the time, “flew up to the ceiling” before “falling” — a moment that was also captured in the video footage.

When the flight arrived in Copenhagen, a “special assistance team” was on site to help customers who were given hotel stays and rebooked on other flights, according to SAS.

Events of severe turbulence are not rare. A United Airlines flight from Cancun to Chicago experienced a similarly terrifying scenario in August.

The airline confirmed to PEOPLE at the time that United Flight 1196 landed in Memphis after encountering “a brief period of severe turbulence” while the seat belt sign was on. One passenger was transported to the hospital at the gate.

An Air Europa flight that hit turbulence in July left dozens of people injured and a man stuck in an overhead bin. At the time, several passengers reported that people not wearing seat belts were unexpectedly thrown from their seats by the rough air. Around 30 passengers were injured on the flight, per Reuters.

Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila were on board a plane that reportedly fell 4,000 feet in a moment of “severe turbulence” in March 2023.

The Brazilian model and entrepreneur shared video footage showing damage inside the aircraft after it made an emergency landing at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

“On the flight last night the plane fell almost 4000 feet, 7 people went to the hospital, everything flew everywhere,” Camila captioned the photo. “Respecting the privacy of those around me, that’s all I’m showing, but the plane was CHAOS. And the turbulence just keeps coming.”

“The @lufthansa planes you see on the news today!!!! Yeah … that one,” the mother of three continued. “Thank God everyone was safe and OK.”
