A full year after the pair were originally scheduled to meet in the Octagon, Jon Jones will defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic in New York on Saturday at UFC 309.

The clash was scheduled for October 2023 as UFC 295’s headliner, but those plans were dashed after Jones was forced to withdraw after suffering a pectoral injury.

The bout marks Jones’ first action since last March, when he claimed the heavyweight belt from Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 with an emphatic first-round submission via guillotine choke.

It’s been an even longer wait for Miocic, who hasn’t fought since losing the heavyweight belt to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 way back in March 2021.

The bill also boasts the long-awaited return of Michael Chandler, who fights for the first time in two years in a match-up against former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.

How to watch UFC 309 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you cannot watch UFC 309 locally due to improperly applied blackout restrictionsyou might need another way to watch the match, and that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to prevent your ISP from throttling your speeds on game night by encrypting your traffic, plus it’s a good idea when you’re on the road and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you’ll add an extra layer of privacy to your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you are able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to access the matchup. So if your ISP or mobile provider has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area . Most VPNs, like ours Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPNmakes it really easy to do this.

It’s legal to use a VPN to watch or stream sports in all countries where VPNs are legal, including the US and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. Make sure your VPN is set up properly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service can terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing properly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming UFC 309 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play – your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN – your experience and success streaming UFC 309 may vary.
  • If you don’t see your desired location as ExpressVPN’s default setting, try using “search by city or country”.
  • If you’re having trouble getting into battle after turning on your VPN and setting it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log in to your streaming service subscription account and ensure that the address registered to the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address registered to your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you use (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network will now appear in the correct display location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main page to quickly install the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you will be asked to confirm a numeric code or click on a link sent to your email address registered with your smart- television. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help as both devices appear to be in the right location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so make sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We usually recommend Brave.
