It’s time for Basketball: Spurs vs Lakers

Welcome to the game thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies, we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

The NBA Cup is back this year, and the Spurs play their first game of the year’s tournament tonight against Lakers in San Antonio. The Lakers won the NBA Cup last season, and with LeBron James still performing at an elite level as he approaches his 40th birthday, they have to be one of the favorites again this year. Spurs lost all four cup games last year and will be looking to improve on that this year and make some noise in the mid-season tournament. It’s mostly for bragging rights, but there’s a nice trophy and a financial bonus for the players, which is especially meaningful for the players at the end of the bench who are close to the NBA minimum.

Anthony Davis is the top scorer for LA, but he has been struggling with an injury (plantar fasciitis). He is doubtful tonight but if he plays he would provide Victor Wembanyama with an interesting defensive challenge. If we know anything about this year’s Spurs team, it’s that they can beat anyone and they can lose to anyone. Let’s hope they can keep the mistakes to a minimum and they can pull through tonight. It’s a quick turnaround for the Silver and Black as they travel to Dallas for a game against the Mavericks tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.

Game Prediction:

Victor Wembanyama will welcome Bronny James to the NBA with a block party.

A final word:
