On Friday night, two of the most hyped no. 1 selection ever, when LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers head to Texas to face Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers enter Friday night’s contest with a 7-4 record, fresh off a 128-123 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, one in which James was exemplary, scoring 35 points, securing 12 rebounds and dishing out 14 assists. That the election no. 1 from 2003 to continue to perform at this level so close to 40 years old is truly remarkable, making Lakers basketball games to watch this season.

The Spurs, meanwhile, sit at 6-6, a much better start than last season when they went 22-60. San Antonio most recently defeated the Washington Wizards 139-130 behind a masterful performance by Wembanyama, who had a career-high 50 points in the contest with six rebounds, two assists and three blocks in what was an otherworldly two-way performance.

The 7-foot-4 swingman, still only 20 years old, is just now beginning to scratch the surface of his potential, so watching his development this campaign is sure to be exciting for both Spurs fans and basketball fans in general.

Wembanyama and James have met twice so far in their careers, with the Spurs and Lakers splitting those two games. On December 15, 2023, San Antonio defeated Los Angeles 129-115 behind the French forward’s 13 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks.

James and the Lakers just came on February 3 this year and defeated San Antonio 123-118 behind James’ 30 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. Wembanyama was also spectacular in that matchup, but had 27 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and five blocks, an unheard of stat line, especially for a player who hasn’t even turned 21 yet.
