Kansas State basketball vs LSU: Wildcats suffer first loss

MANHATTAN – The Kansas State basketball basketball was unveiled, and it wasn’t pretty.

LSU outscored the Wildcats, controlled the boards and never had to break a sweat in the second half Thursday night en route to a comfortable 76-65 victory at Bramlage Coliseum.

It was the first loss for K-State, which fell to 2-1 while LSU improved to 3-0.

Former Wildcat Cam Carter had a triumphant return to Bramlage, scoring 20 points to lead four LSU players in double figures. Vyctorius Miller and Jordan Sears each added 15 for the Tigers, who shot 50%.

Corey Chest led the Tigers to a dominant 43-25 rebounding advantage with 13.

For K-State, David N’Guessan and Dug McDaniel each had 16 points, with N’Guessan adding five rebounds and Dug McDaniel five assists in his first start as a Wildcat. K-State shot just 37.7%.

K-State is back in action at home Tuesday with a 7:00 pm game against Mississippi Valley.

LSU led by as many as 17 points in the first half and was up 43-31 at halftime.

LSU used a 16-2 run to take control late in the first half, opening a 43-26 lead on Cam Carter’s lob dunk with 1:56 left in the period. K-State got a 3-pointer from Brendan Hausen and two Macaleab Rich free throws in the final minute to close the gap to 12 at halftime.

Carter had 12 points in the half for LSU, while McDaniel and N’Guessan each scored 10 to lead K-State at halftime.

K-State suffers its first loss, 76-65, against LSU.

K-State has forced 10 turnovers in the second half, but LSU is shooting 52.9% in the half to 30.4 for the Wildcats, and there you have it.

LSU comfortably ahead, 67-54, with 3:43 left. The Tigers have outscored K-State in the game, 40-22.

K-State has turned the ball over just once in the half and has forced eight by LSU, but can’t make a dent in the Tigers’ lead.

The culprit for K-State? Try shooting 29.4% in the half, not to mention a 15-7 rebound deficit.

K-State is on a 6-0 run, thanks to a baseline drive and then steal and layup by Dug McDaniel, but the Wildcats still trail 56-46 with 9:14 left.

LSU calls timeout.

David N’Guessan finally got K-State within single digits at 49-40, but four straight points by LSU have the Tigers still in control, 53-40, with 11:49 left.

K-State is a frosty 2 for 12 shooting in the second half, including 1 of 5 from 3-point range. The Wildcats will need to pick it up on offense if they are going to make a run here.

LSU has opened the door for a K-State comeback with three early second-half turnovers, but the Wildcats are just 1-of-8 shooting and continue to trail by a dozen 49-37, with 15:23 remaining.

The Tigers are shooting 51.5% and have outscored the Wildcats, 21-12, and have a 10-3 advantage in points off turnovers, though each team has turned the ball over five times.

Dug McDaniel and David N’Guessan lead K-State with 10 points apiece, but the Wildcats were ice cold to end the first half, shooting 36.4% in the period, including 4 of 13 from 3-point range.

Kansas State finally gets a 3-pointer from Brendan Hausen and Macaleab Rich hits two free throws for a 5-0 Wildcat run, but LSU leads at the half, 43-31.

Kansas State has made 1 of 7 shots during a 12-2 LSU run and trails 39-26 with 3:12 left in the half. The Wildcats need to push her before the break.

LSU has an 8-2 advantage in second-chance points.

LSU has made six of its last eight shots and K-State has gone more than three minutes without a basket as the Tigers open a 36-24 lead with 4:37 left in the half.

Dug McDaniel already has 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and three assists to lead K-State to a 17-16 lead with 10:37 left in the half.

The Wildcats’ rebounding woes continue as LSU has four second-chance points on four offensive rebounds.

K-State jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a lob layup and 3-pointer by David N’Guessan, both assisted by Dug McDaniel. The Wildcats are up 7-5 at the first media timeout with 16 minutes left in the half.

Michigan transfer guard Dug McDaniel will make his first start as a Wildcat against LSU, taking over for CJ Jones at the time. McDaniel leads the Wildcats in assists with 6.0 per match.

He is joined in the starting lineup by Max Jones and Brendan Hausen at guard, with David N’Guessan and Coleman Hawkins at forward.

Former K-Stater Cam Carter starts for LSU. He leads the Tigers in scoring with 21 points per game.
