PHILADELPHIA − The Eagles and that Commanders each boasting the top 10 offenses in the NFL.

But neither team played like that in the first half. At least the Eagles didn’t until their final drive of the first half, starting at their 10 with 4:11 left in the half. But the Eagles drive stalled at the Commanders’ 3-yard line and they settled for a Jake Elliott field goal with 19 seconds left.

Jalen Hurts threw incomplete on 3rd-and-goal from the 3 as he dived forward before the field goal. He was then sent to the medical tent but jogged into the dressing room as the half ended.

It was the Eagles’ only points in the first half as they trailed 7-3. Part of that is because Elliott missed two field goals earlier in the first half.

Hurts was evaluated for a concussion and cleared to return.

Saquon Barkley’s big play leads to field goal, Eagles behind 10-6

Elliott hit his second field goal with 5:32 left in the third quarter, pulling the Eagles within 10-6. The play was set up by Saquon Barkley’s 43-yard reception. Hurts dumped the ball off to Barkley on a 3rd-and-6 from the 40. Barkley made a tackler miss, then sped up the middle to the Commanders’ 17.

The drive stalled, leading to a 31-yard field goal.

Not much offense

There was not much else in the way of offense in the first half. The Eagles’ Saquon Barkley went over 1,000 yards rushing early in the game, and he had 56 yards on 15 carries. Jalen Hurts was 10-for-19 for 101 yards passing in the first half.

But it was mostly a game for both teams. Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels was 8-for-13 for 83 yards. He ran 3 times for 8 yards.

He didn’t have much help. Running back Brian Robinson has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, but he was cleared to play Thursday night, giving Daniels another opportunity along with star receiver Terry McLaurin and tight end Zach Ertz, the former Eagle.

So the game can come down to which defense can best slow down the opposing team. The Eagles appear to have the edge as they rank fifth in rushing defense, allowing 101 yards per carry. match. The Commanders, meanwhile, are 28th, allowing 143 yards per carry. match.

Both teams are ranked in the top five in pass defense. The Eagles rank third allowing 173 yards per carry. game, the Commanders are fifth, allowing 182.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott missed two field goals in the first quarter. The first was from 44 yards on the opening drive. The other was from 51 yards in the second quarter. For the season, Elliott is 0-for-4 from 50 yards or more, and 12-for-17 overall (70.5%). Elliott’s low for a season is 73.7% in 2020.

The Eagles again started slowly and fell behind. They opened the game by driving to the Commanders’ 23. But Jake Elliott missed a 44-yard field goal. Later in the quarter, the Commanders moved down the field, aided by a 34-yard pass play from Jayden Daniels to the Eagles’ 24, and an 18-yard run by Brian Robinson to the Eagles’ 1.

Robinson took the ball in on the next play, giving Washington a 7-0 lead with 3:26 left in the first quarter.

Saquon Barkley joined LeSean McCoy in 2011 as the only Eagles to surpass 1,000 yards in the 10th game of the season. Barkley had 991 yards entering the game. McCoy holds the franchise record with 1,607 yards in 2013.

The Eagles have all 53 players on their roster eligible to play, a rarity for this point in the season and especially coming off a game just four days earlier. The Eagles will have all 11 projected offensive starters together for the first time since Week 1 now that left tackle Jordan Mailata is back from injured reserve.

The inactives are QB Tanner McKee, CB Eli Ricks, S Tristin McCollum, OL Nick Gates, G/T Darian Kinnard and G Trevor Keegan. The Eagles gave TE CJ Uzomah a promotion to the practice squad.

The Commanders listed CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) among their inactives. He has yet to play for Washington since being acquired from the Saints on Nov. 5.

Eagles activate LT Jordan Mailata from injured reserve

The Eagles got a key player back on their offensive line when left tackle Jordan Mailata was activated from injured reserve on Wednesday. Mailata had missed the required four games with a hamstring injury. Fred Johnson had filled in while Mailata was out.

Jordan Magee of Delaware, a freshman linebacker for the Commanders

Dover High School star Jordan Magee, a linebacker, was the Commanders’ fifth-round draft pick last spring after playing collegiately at Temple. So Magee is very familiar with Lincoln Financial Field since the Owls play their home games there.

Magee has entered the last three games for the Commanders, all on special teams.
