Coppin State has been a busy team over the last 10 days or so, with four games under their belt. That said, they have all been losses. The first three came 64-49 against Wake Forest in the opener, then 93-51 against High Point and 64-53 in the Rider game on Saturday.

In game four against Virginia, Coppin State was down 32-16 at halftime. The Eagles ended up getting no closer on a 30-29 second half and lost 62-45. Derrius Ward (12 points; nine rebounds) and Jonathan Dunn (11 points; two rebounds) were the team’s only double-digit scorers.

UMBC Retrievers Betting Preview

Over on the UMBC side, they have three games on the line this year. The Retrievers started the season with a 95-66 win over Penn St. York, but then got teased by Penn State 103-54 in game two for a 1-1 record through the first pair.

Against Valley Forge on Monday, the Retrievers jumped out to a dominant 60-30 edge at halftime. After another 60 points in the second half, UMBC had the win 120-61. Bryce Johnson had 23 points in the win and Louie Jordan had 22 points with six boards.

I’ll probably just stay with UMBC. The Retrievers have a few wins versus overmatched teams this year, along with a road loss to a relatively large Penn State squad. In their loss, UMBC shot just 29.2 percent from the field with 17 turnovers and a 50-35 rebounding deficit. The good news for the retrievers is that they will match much, much better here.

As for Coppin State, they shot a lackluster 28 percent from the field and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from outside in their most recent loss to Virginia. The Eagles weren’t too bad on the boards (a 39-30 disadvantage), hitting 13 of 16 (81.3 percent) from the line. Coppin State should finish closer on Thursday, but I don’t think they cover.
