There are tons of other online word games now, but I still play New York Times Wordle play every day. These days it’s not just an old friend, it’s also a nice warm-up for Connections, Strands and the rest.

We’ve also ranked all the letters of the alphabet by popularity if you want to use this list to determine your best starting words.

Daily Wordle tips

I’ve written a lot about Wordle — from covering its 1,000. words to my list of the best starter words for a useful two-step strategy for news about controversial word changes. I even compiled what I learned from playing the hit online word puzzle game for a whole year. If you’re reconsidering your need for the actual answer, try tips from one of these stories.

Still need a starter word? One person told me they just look around and pick a five-letter item they’ve seen as their starting word – like SOFA or CHAIR. I tend to stick to starting words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I have read it people use the economic term ROATEbut I like to use words I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback on whether the letters you guessed are in the puzzle or not, and whether they’re in the same place you guessed they were. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle created the game for his partner and had her narrow the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to just 2,500, creating the database of answers. It was also handy that he has a name that plays “word”.

A spokesperson for the Times told me that it shows the very first Wordle that came out on June 19, 2021, and the paper celebrated the game’s 1,000th. words on March 15. Spoiler: The 1,000th. word was ERUPT. As in, “Dad will freak out if Wordle is so hard he loses his streak.”
