ForbesToday’s ‘Word’ #1242 Hints, Clues and Answer for Tuesday, November 12

Wednesday is named after the god Odin, the Father of the All. The word in French is Mercredi and in Spanish Miercoles. In Italian it is Mercoledì These are named after the Roman god, Mercury. Both Odin and Mercury are gods of intellect and trickery – think “mercurial” – and both are seen as cunning.

Interestingly, in Portuguese, Wednesday is Quarta-feira, or “fourth fair,” a word that leaves out pagan gods entirely. Perhaps it is more interesting that so many days are still devoted to pagan gods given the enormous influence of Christianity on all aspects of life. Except for Saturday (Sabado) and Sunday (Domingo), all days of the week in Portuguese are named after a number instead of a god.

It’s Wordle Wednesday, here’s your riddle:

“We see without eyes and fly on dark wings,

Gathering knowledge from peasants and kings.

We serve the Al-Father with news from afar,

If you know his name, you know who we are.”

If you figure this out, please let me know! I will send the answer tomorrow.

In any case, we have a word to solve. Let’s do it!

Well, not too bad considering how difficult this word is. CRATE is a solid opener on any day and left me with only 60 words today. STOLT cut it down to four, but unfortunately that was still too many to tie this into a bow on guess #3. However, PRISM left me with only one remaining solution: PRIMP for the win!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word primp probably originated in the early 19th century as a mixture of primary (meaning “nice” or “correct”) and the preen (meaning “to tidy up or arrange carefully, especially one’s appearance”). It developed in English to describe the act of making small adjustments or improvements to one’s appearance, often with an element of self-conscious attention to detail.
