Class II recall issued on nearly 80,000 pounds of Costco Kirkland Signature Butter

If you’ve bought butter from Costco recently, it’s time to check your fridge.

In early October, the FDA issued an initial recall of Kirkland Signature butter, produced by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC. The recall is for 79,200 pounds of butter due to an undeclared allergen. According to the FDA, the packages of both salted and unsalted Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter list cream as an ingredient, but may not include the “Contains milk” allergy statement visible on the packaging.

On November 7, the FDA classified recall as Class IImeaning it is “a situation where use of or exposure to an offending product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the likelihood of serious health consequences is small.”

The recalled products, which were both manufactured and distributed in Texas, include 1,300 cases (equivalent to about 46,800 pounds) of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 900 cases (equivalent to 32,400 pounds) of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter. The products all come with “best by” dates between February 22, 2025 and March 29, 2025.

As the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) noticedmilk is one of the main foods that “account for the most serious allergic reactions in the United States.”

“The symptoms and severity of allergic reactions to food may differ between individuals and may also differ for a person over time,” the CDC added. “Anaphylaxis is a sudden and severe allergic reaction that can cause death. Not all allergic reactions will develop into anaphylaxis, and more than 40% (2 out of 5) of children with food allergies in the United States are treated in the emergency room.”

While the FDA hasn’t issued information on what to do if you’ve purchased these recalled items — nor has it shared if there’s been any illness or side effects from consuming the product — the usual course of action is to either throw them away or return them to your place of purchase just in case.
