Excitement mounts as KC Current returns to the NWSL playoffs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City paints the city teal as the KC Current return to the NWSL playoffs.

More than 11,000 fans will fill the stands at CPKC Stadium for Saturday’s kick-off at 7 p.m. 11 against the North Carolina Courage.

KC Current and CPKC Stadium are gearing up for a weekend full of firsts

Among them will be Zach and Marina Funk, who have been fans since the team started four years ago. The pair are excited for their first playoff game in the new stadium.

“I think it’s the atmosphere. I think it’s so funny. Everyone gets so excited,” Marina said, to which Zach said, “It’s a great opportunity to showcase our women’s team and be able to have a stadium to do it in.”

The last time the KC Current faced North Carolina at home, they won. A win on Saturday means progressing to the semi-finals away from home.

If the Current progress to the finals, as they did in 2022, it will take them back to their home stadium on November 23. It would also secure them their first ever NWSL playoff title.

The Current led the league this season in goals scored with 57, half of them thanks to Temwa Chawinga. The 26-year-old standout won the 2024 NWSL Golden Boot and fans are hoping she is the secret to winning it all this time around.
