Residents of Jefferson County are being urged to leave before floodwaters rise further

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Initial Alert 4) — Evacuations have been ordered for parts of the Pacific Ocean with the Meremac River set to rise to major flood levels by Saturday.

In Jefferson County, levels are expected to rise in the coming hours.

According to the Cedar Hill Fire Protection District, about 15-20 people were rescued from their homes Wednesday morning.

Even with warnings asking people to leave the area, Fire Chief Mick Fisher says some don’t want to follow the department’s advice.

“Some of these people were people that we were there before and we tried to get them to come out and they wouldn’t come out and then they called us and we had to go back and get them,” said Fisher.

Jefferson County’s Big River is prone to flooding, so some longtime residents have experienced this before.

Chief Fisher believes what’s coming could be a scenario residents won’t be prepared for, so he’s trying to do what he can to get people out now.

“When we try to bring them up to that, you know, it turns into an argument…” he said. “The best thing is if they can get out now, is to get out.”
