Kirk Herbstreit’s adorable golden retriever Ben, who brought countless smiles to so many college campuses over the past two years, has passed away, according to the ESPN “College GameDay” football analyst.

A certified emotional service animalBen became famous for his infectious, friendly nature while in the national spotlight every week. He caused uncontrollable “oohs-and-ahs” as he accompanied Herbstreit around the country covering football.

Ben would often be seen on set during live productions.

The longtime ESPN commentator also wanted to bring his beloved dog to his “Thursday Night Football” on Prime Video concert.

Herbstreit said Ben died after a battle with cancer.

“This is really hard to write but so many of you have loved and cared for Ben that I wanted to tell you. We found out today that the cancer had spread through Ben’s organs and there was nothing left, we could do — we had to let him go,” Herbstreit wrote on social media alongside a photo showing him with his arm around Ben.

Ben had been with Herbstreit for 10 years and had fallen ill this year. According to ESPN, Ben was diagnosed with leukemia in March and underwent surgery in July.

“I’ve had dogs all my life, but Ben was 1 for 1. He was smart-loving-gentle-patient-curious-and welcoming to everyone. Always a big smile and a soft wagging tail. He and I could communicate..he and I understood each other and had each other’s backs. He was with me more than anyone else at home and traveled with me to work. Such a relaxed companion. Hard day – but he will live in all of us forever.”

On Tuesday, Herbstreit said Ben had received his second chemotherapy injection in late October and that his condition was worsening.

“One of the hardest things I’ve been through in my life. Ben is my best friend and companion. I love him with all my heart,” he said earlier this week.

The dog became a fan favorite in 2023 when Herbstreit first brought the large lab on the road.

The college football expert explained how much he loved the Ben phenom in January.

“There’s just something different about him. I’m just happy that people love his happiness and it makes their day better,” he said.

“It wasn’t meant to be. I just wanted a companion out on the road with me as much as I travel. He’s a really good buddy of mine.”

Herbstreit depicted the joy Ben brought into the world as the couple went to work.

Ben often received his own press credentials – giving the pup coveted field access.

Tributes to Ben poured in after the news of his death.
