Darren Rizzi delivers ‘differently’ in first practice as interim head coach of New Orleans Saints

“Our backs are against the wall and it’s a shame we put ourselves there,” Carr said. “But what I saw today was a team — that I was really proud of how we coached — because we came out and fought.

“There’s a lot of guys trying to do the right thing and for me the feeling today was who’s next on the schedule, they’ve got to be ready for a game. We’re not going to just lay down and die, lay down and let it happen. You have to fight back. We are in a difficult situation, but we have no one to blame.

“(Allen) took the head off it because he was the head coach, but at the end of the day, everybody in our building had a hand in it. We all felt it, but today was a good practice. Today was a good day .

“That’s the only option you have. You can either quit or just keep fighting no matter what. I just think we have a locker room full of guys that are just going to keep fighting no matter what happening.”

What happened for the Saints on Wednesday was a sense of “different.” Carr said he stressed in a conversation with teammates Monday that “different” had to happen.

“I said whoever it is (as interim coach), whether it was good or bad, it doesn’t matter, it just has to be different,” he said. “When you enter the building on Wednesday, it has to feel different, it has to be a new energy, because you go no matter how many in a row that have not gone well, something that Wednesday has to feel different. And this Wednesday felt different. .

“Just because it feels different, does it result in wins and all that? No. But it usually results in good results down the road. Our plan is to do the good results now.

“But whatever it is, the feel of the building — the energy, the schedule, whatever — you’ve got to start doing things differently. (Rizzi) said, look, we’ve got to do something different, and we’re all have to buy into it. And we bought into it.

“When that happens, it’s just in my experience that’s usually a good thing. My experience is that if you come in with something different and a plan that points to winning — we’ve all had spurts where we have won in our careers — and you look at that, which reminds me of that, and it gives you hope.”
