San Antonio cold front TONIGHT with risk of severe thunderstorms

SAN ANTONIO – While the week starts out warm and humid, our next cold front is on the way with some relief and also the risk of thunderstorms in our region.

We start very mild today, damp and windy with another round of sprinkles, mist or light rain. This will be enough to create morning wet streets, some puddles. In the afternoon, skies will become partly sunny with temperatures rising into the upper 80s to even around 90 in a few places.

Tonight we will see the cold front slowly push into the area arriving west after sunset and then push into the San Antonio area between 10:00 PM – 1:00 AM. While we could see a few showers or even an isolated thunderstorm develop before the front arrives, the main zone of thunderstorms will develop once the front hits.

There will be enough instability in the atmosphere to drive storm updrafts and just enough wind shear to go along with the instability to intensify a few storms. A level 1 out of 5 “marginal” severe storm outlook overlaps in our region and may expand in the next update to include a few more counties in our area. The main hazards will be strong gusts and hail in strong to severe storms.

In terms of precipitation, a general 0.50″ – 1.50″+ precipitation is possible as the line of rain and storms develops and then moves eastward. Areas west of this zone will unfortunately see much less.

Temperatures will drop nicely behind the front, but the air behind this cold front is cool Pacific air and not polar. This will simply bring temperatures closer to average in the mid 70s with a nice drop in humidity levels for a few days before our next late week rain chance with increased humidity arrives.

After isolated showers and storms move east Tuesday morning, fair weather will prevail through Wednesday. Chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms develop Thursday through Friday, then fair weather returns over the weekend. Temperatures will remain above average.
