TikTok ordered to shut down Canada’s national security risk unit

Canada ordered ByteDance Ltd. to liquidate its subsidiary TikTok Technology Canada, Inc. — though the move won’t stop Canadians from using the popular Chinese-backed social video app.

The decision follows a national security review with evidence and advice from Canada’s security and intelligence services, according to a declaration Wednesday from the Minister of Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne. In 2023, the country joined allies, including the United States and the European Union, in banning the application on state-issued devices.
