Missourians pass amendment banning ranked-choice voting

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Missourians voted Tuesday to ban ranked-choice elections after rejecting Amendment 7.

The measure asked the voters to amend the state constitution to allow only US citizens to vote in elections, which is already federal law, and to ban ranked-choice elections.

In a typical election in the United States, a single winner is selected from whoever has the most votes. However, when there are more than two candidates, it may result in one candidate having less than 50% of the votes to achieve the elected post.

IN a ranked choice systempeople vote for candidates according to their preference. In a ranked election, the candidate with the fewest votes will be eliminated and their votes will be reallocated to that voter’s second choice.

This system would repeat until one person has more than 50% of the votes.

This change to ranked choice votes will affect both primary and general elections.
