“The reason for…” – Maresca forced to defend his tactical decision

When things are going well, the press likes to sit and hear a manager explain why.

But when things start to falter a little – as they have in the last few games for Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca – the questions tend to get a little more pointed and specific.

Today is a perfect example. When things are going well and smoothly, the coach is allowed to do whatever he wants. But after 1 win in 4 games the press started asking Maresca about his use of his backs.

The latest trend from the Italian coach has been to use Reece James on the right, with Malo Gusto facing left. Although we have also seen the reverse of that.

There is no doubt that it creates a slight imbalance in the squad as Chelsea end up using both of their right backs every week, only to have to wedge Axel Disasi in out of position on the right for cup games, while only one of our three left backs get used.

Maresca explains her decisions on the back

Asked about this, Maresca explained the reasoning:

“The reason why it is first and foremost is because we think that with Malo there, when we play as 10s, we think we can create and create problems for the opposition. He is certainly doing great .

“I said in the last press conference: Malo helps us a lot in the process because he plays as a solid midfielder, he plays in the pocket, he plays, I think for a moment, as a central defender. It’s a bit like Renato (Veiga) playing in different positions, but it’s definitely going well with Malo and he’ll continue like that.

Win this weekend and no one will question these specific tactical quirks.
