INDIANAPOLIS — Pascal Siakam scored 29 points and hit what turned out to be the game-winning 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds left in overtime to rescue the Pacers in a 135-132 overtime victory in a game the Pacers led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter.

Pacers improve to 2-3. The defending NBA champion Celtics fell to 4-1.

Bennedict Mathurin scored 30 points after playing just 14 minutes in Monday’s loss to Orlando. Obi Toppin had 18 points and Tyrese Haliburton had 17 points and 12 assists. Jayson Tatum had 37 points to lead Boston. Jaylen Brown had 25 and Derrick White had 23.

Jaylen Brown airballed a 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left and Tyrese Haliburton inbounded Derrick White’s back to put the game away. Pacers survive.

Pascal Siakam just hit a massive 3 off a huge rebound by Ben Sheppard. The Pacers have a chance to sneak away with this one.

Pascal Siakam turnaround jumper ties the game. He has 26, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Great answer there.

Derrick White drove and drew a goaltend from Obi Toppin, and the Celtics are up for the first time since taking a one-point lead in the first quarter. Celtics are 2 of 7 in OT, Pacers are 2 of 8.

After a completely disastrous fourth quarter for the Pacers. We have overtime. The Pacers were 7 of 22 from the floor with six turnovers in that span. Celtics 12 of 23, 6 of 14 for 3.

This is getting away from the Pacers quickly. The Celtics are on a 9-0 run. Pacers led by as many as 24. They are down 33-22 in the period.

Tyrese Haliburton hit a big pull-up to make it 124-123 with about 33 seconds left, but Jayson Tatum tied it with a 3 with 14.1 seconds left. Haliburton misses a 3 at the end of regulation and we go to OT.

The Celtics started to mount a comeback, but the Pacers have responded, making 4 of their first 6 field goals to start the fourth, while the Celtics are 1 of 5. The Pacers are up 58-30 in the paint, and Obi Toppin just hit a thump down.

Jayson Tatum got right to the rim before the end of the third period to cut what was a 24-point Pacers lead down to 14 points, so Boston is driving here, but the Pacers are clearly playing their best game of the year so far. They still outscored Boston 33-29 in the third shooting 12 of 23 for the period and 4 of 8 from 3. They are 39 of 73 from the floor entering the fourth, while the Celtics are 30 of 77. The Pacers are at 1.20 points per possession. The Celtics are at 1.02.

So a bit of an odd lineup deal. Andrew Nembhard played only 5 minutes in the first half and he only came out of the locker room at halftime at the start of the third period. However, Pacers PR said there is no injury to Nembhard that they are aware of. Bennedict Mathurin started in his place and Mathurin cooks. He just hit a 3-pointer and he has 23 points.

The Pacers are 7 of 9 from the floor, 4 of 5 from 3 out of the gate in the second half and are starting to blow this one open.

Tyrese Haliburton missed his first six shots, but eventually got one going on a funky-looking pull-up in the lane where he drove left, pulled off his right foot and hit a dribble jumper from about 11 feet.

It was a strong quarter on both ends for the Pacers, who shot 13 of 26 from the floor, 4 of 7 from 3 and posted 1.20 points per game. possession while holding the Celtics to 8 of 25 shooting. Five of those eight buckets were 3-pointers, which kept Boston in it, but overall the Pacers did a good job of making Celtics drives difficult. The Pacers are up 40-20 in points in the paint.

Pascal Siakam leads the Pacers with 17 points. Aaron Nesmith, Bennedict Mahturin have nine each. Tatum has 15, Brown and White have 10 each.

The Pacers responded to Boston’s shooting rhythm by finding their own. They are 9 of 15 from the floor, 3 of 5 from 3-point range in the second period, and are posting 1.45 points per game. possession in the quarter. Boston, meanwhile, is 5 of 19 from the floor, although they are 4 of 11 from 3. Bennedict Mathurin has nine points in the period and is showing some juice. Siakam has two of those 3s and is up to 15 points for the game.

The Pacers shoot the ball better overall and are up 28-16 in points in the paint and up 18-13 on the glass, but as always, the Celtics can quickly get back into the game thanks to the 3-ball. Payton Pritchard’s 3 just before the timeout helped Boston cut what was a nine-point deficit not long ago to two.

The Celtics are 6 of 15 from 3, while the Pacers are 3 of 10.

Derrick White hit a 3 at the buzzer to cut the deficit to four, but the Pacers still had a strong overall finish to the first period. They look motivated as you would expect, they play faster and get the ball to the rim.

Through one stretch, the Pacers are 14 of 25 from the floor, 2 of 8 from 3, 5 of 5 at the line for 1.20 points per possession. possession. Meanwhile, the Celtics are 11 of 26, 3 of 10, 6 of 8 for 1.09 points per game. possession. The Pacers are up 13-11 on the glass, so they do a good job of getting after loose balls. Pascal Siakam with nine points, Isaiah Jackson eight and Obi Toppin seven, so good work by the front court across the board.

The Pacers play a funky second unit with Obi Toppin at the 5, Jarace Walker at the 4, and Tyrese Haliburton, TJ McConnell and Bennedict Mathurin in the backcourt and it still works reasonably well. They are 10 of 19 from the floor so far and have put up 1.17 points per game so far. possession, while the Celtics are 8 of 17 and have 0.92.

Early on, this one looks competitive, as a conference finals rematch should. Both teams get to the rim and make strong finishes. The Celtics are 6 of 9 from the floor with 10 points in the paint. Jaylen Brown has eight of them. The Pacers are 7 of 12. Pascal Siakam and Isaiah Jackson each have six points. Jackson is doing a good job of attacking the rim in relief of Myles Turner. Pacers with 1.35 points per possession for the time being. Celtics at 1.18.

Isaiah Jackson starts for the injured Myles Turner. Al Horford starts for the injured Kristaps Porzingis. The rest of the starters are as expected.

Dustin Dopirak: Celtics 120-112

The Pacers are looking more like themselves despite losing their third straight. The offense runs smoothly, gets the ball in the paint and hits 3-pointers. All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton at least shook off some of what has plagued him, and All-Star power forward Pascal Siakam chased mismatches and took advantage of them.

They looked like a team that should win their next game … except the opponent is the Boston Celtics. They’re rolling, and oddly enough, their closest game was against the Detroit Pistons.

The Pacers will be competitive, but the Celtics will see them coming and will be a little too much.

Expect Indiana to break through this weekend on the road.
