Australia vs India: Jasprit Bumrah strikes late but hosts on top in Sydney

Australia dismissed India for 185 on day one of the fifth Test, but a fired-up Jasprit Bumrah struck with the final ball of the day to give the tourists a late boost.

Bumrah had opener Usman Khawaja caught at second slip for two and turned to celebrate the 19-year-old Sam Konstas, with India believing both players wasted time in what turned out to be the last over.

Trailing 2-1 in the best-of-five series and needing to win to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy, the tourists had earlier provisionally reached their total on a spirited Sydney pitch.

They left out struggling captain Rohit Sharma, but the switch did little to improve their top-order fortunes as Scott Boland took 4-31.

India were 72-4 when Boland dismissed Virat Kohli for 17 and 120-6 when Rishabh Pant, who topped with a careful 40, and Nitish Kumar Reddy fell to the seam in consecutive balls.

But Bumrah, who captained India in Rohit’s place, hit three fours and a six in a 17-ball 22 to lift the total and his dismissal bought time for India to have three overs in Australia before the close.

The hosts looked to have survived with Bumrah accusing Khawaja of wasting time in the final over before exchanging words with Konstas as Australia ran down the clock to ensure there was no time for another over.

However, Bumrah got the last laugh when he dismissed Khawaja for the sixth time in this series and the left-hander edged to KL Rahul who took a fine low catch.

That left Australia, who only need a draw to reclaim the trophy, 9-1.

India need a win to stay in contention to qualify for the World Test Championship final later this year.
