First snow accumulation in 2025 arrives late Thursday, stronger system possible Sunday | Jan 1, 2025 – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Winter happened to make a renewed appearance as we began the new year this Wednesday. Temperatures were kept in the 30s due to a stiff northwesterly wind.

This forecast is set to be active with more snow possibilities and this includes the upcoming system this Sunday that could cause a significant impact in our local area.

Wednesday evening: Scattered light snow showers/showers will continue into the night. Winds will also ease slightly with temperatures dropping into the mid to upper 20s.

Thursday: A dry start is expected on Thursday before our next weather system moves in. Snow looks set to move in as early as late afternoon in northwestern parts of the state. Coverage extends into the overnight hours with the potential for some moderate snowfall.

We expect up to 0.5″-1″ of snow to occur in areas mainly along and north of Interstate 74. Locally, higher amounts are possible. Areas south of Interstate 74 will be in this coating for 0.5″ range.

Highs will top out in the mid to upper 30s.

Friday: Arctic air pushes in further to close out the work week. Thursday’s system will also cause winds to become gusty out of the northwest again throughout Friday. This culminates in a bitter day with actual air temperatures rising into the mid-20s, but wind chill values expected to drop from the teens to single digits.

7-day weather forecast: We’ll stick with the bitter air through the first weekend of 2025 with highs in the mid-20s. Wind chill values will be in the single digits at times. After that, we track the potential for a wintry weather system Sunday through Monday. At this point, we still can’t say much in terms of details regarding tracks and exact amounts of snowfall. One thing we will say is that accumulating snow is possible for areas of the Ohio Valley. We just can’t say for sure who in Indiana will get the bulk of the snow and/or possible mixed precipitation. Keep in mind that we could end up being even colder than this weekend in next week’s time frame.
