It’s a new year and month, but when are the January holidays and events? Here are the dates to look out for this month, including when the National Day of Mourning is.

In total, there are 12 federal holidays in 2025 spread over 11 days, and 3 of those holidays fall in January, according to Office of Personnel ManagementOPM.

Not included on the list is the national day of mourning for the death of former President Jimmy Carter, which Joe Biden declared will be held on January 9, prompting organizations to close for the day.

Here’s what you need to know about this month’s public holidays and their dates.

January federal holidays

Here are the dates for January’s federal holidays, according to OPM:

  • Wednesday 1 January: New Year’s Day
  • Monday 20 January: Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Monday 20 January: Inauguration day

When is the National Day of Mourning?

The National Day of Mourning is Thursday, January 9.

When is Inauguration Day?

Inauguration day is Monday 20 January.

President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in at noon today.

When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place on Monday, January 20.

Are MLK Day and Inauguration Day on the same day?

Yes. Inauguration Day and MLK Day, which falls on the third Monday in January, occur on the same day.

Which holidays are public holidays?

Only New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Day are considered holidays, according to New York State’s website.

While the National Day of Mourning is not listed as a public holiday, organizations have begun announcing that they will be closed on that day.

The following organizations will be closed to honor Carter:

  • Federal offices, as ordered by Biden
  • New York Stock Exchange
  • Nasdaq
  • The Supreme Court

The US Postal Service is also expected to close on the death of the former president, as it did during the last national day of mourning in December 2018, when President George HW Bush died.

  • National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (January 9)
  • National Bagel Day (January 15)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day (January 18)
