Michigan minimum wage to rise in 2025: What to know

game

The standard minimum wage in Michigan will rise to $10.56 an hour starting Jan. 1, the first of two planned increases to the state’s base wage scheduled this year.

From January 1, the minimum hourly wage in Michigan for adults will increase from $10.33 to $10.56. The minimum wage for minors will increase from $8.78 an hour to $8.98 an hour. The tipped minimum wage, the lower rate paid to workers who are expected to make the bulk of their earnings in tips, will rise from $3.93 an hour to $4.01 an hour.

Another raise is coming

However, the rates will only be in place for a matter of weeks — starting February 21, the minimum wage will rise again due to a July 2024 Michigan Supreme Court ruling.

Effective February 21, the minimum wage will be $12.48 an hour for adults, $10.61 an hour for minors, and the minimum wage with tips will be $5.99 an hour.

Why an extra raise?

The court ruled that the Michigan legislature acted unconstitutionally in 2018 when it passed a petition from an initiative seeking to raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2022, but changed the language to delay the increase to $12 an hour in 2030. The court ordered the Treasury to implement a new minimum wage scale, adjusted for inflation.

Future salary increases

The year 2025 is the first year affected by the new minimum wage scale, which will see the minimum wage increase to nearly $15 an hour in 2029. Along with the increases to the standard hourly rate, the tipped minimum wage will increase before being eliminated entirely in 2030.
