Cold front brings near-freezing temperatures to Texas

It’s getting cold in San Antonio, like really cold. In fact, it will start to feel like winter for just a few days in much of Texas, but the Alamo City will finally get its fair share of cold air.

Some arctic, dry air is expected to flow through San Antonio on Friday, and that will drop temperatures significantly. Temperatures are not expected to even reach 55 degrees in the afternoon heat on both Friday and Saturday. This marks the first bout of really cold air to hit the Alamo City since late summer.

“The dry low-level air and good overflow pattern picking up again Friday will lead to a much cooler day than was expected just a few days ago,” National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office reports. “Light showers are expected to move into the northern Hill Country by noon (Friday), so their air temperature will have the opportunity to rise a few degrees from the morning low.”

For San Antonio, high temperatures are expected to top out at 53 degrees on both Friday, December 6 and Saturday afternoon. And the low temperatures will get even cooler, dipping into the mid to low 40s Friday night.

These cool temperatures will be felt even more strongly in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio, as is fairly typical given their elevation and position to the north. In Fredericksburg, temperatures won’t break 50 degrees Friday or Saturday, and lows will dip into the mid to upper 30s.

There’s no freeze on the horizon for the rolling hills of Central Texas, but the chances of rain are higher in the Hill Country than they are in the metropolitan areas. From Kerrville to Fredericksburg, there is anywhere from a 30% to 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms between Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

This cold front cooling trend will also have a sweeping impact across Texas. Texas Panhandle cities that Amarillowill see overnight temperatures drop into the low 30s Thursday night and continue to dip below 40 through the weekend. However, afternoon temperatures will be surprisingly warmer than San Antonio, reaching into the mid to upper 60s.

In North Texas, cities such as Dallas and Fort Worth will see near-freezing temperatures overnight starting Thursday, December 5, but low temperatures will hover in the low 40s through the weekend. Afternoons will also be cool, staying below 50 degrees throughout the weekend.
