Own goal: Charlie Lindgren backhands his own net and gives Brayden Point a bizarre hat-trick

Charlie Lindgren just gave up the most embarrassing goal of his professional career. Actually, let’s just say he pulled A Hagelin.

Moments after Dylan Strome tied the Capitals and Lightning 3-3 in the third period, Lindgren came out to play the puck in the left faceoff circle. Feeling the pressure, the Capitals goaltender turned and returned the puck into his own net as he tried to clear the puck down the opposite sideline.

Sorry to steal your bit, Steve, but guys, it’s a dangit.

Lindgren’s foul play came when the puck appeared to bounce on him and rise to the side, upping his angle as he tried to knock the puck away.

After the own goal, Indgren retrieved the puck from the net and cheekily threw it into the Lyn crowd.

The goal was eventually awarded Brayden Pointgiving the Lightning a hat trick as he was the last player to touch the puck. Point did it while trying to collect a pass by Vasilevskiy along the sideboards about 180 feet away from Lindgren.

The goal judges spent several minutes reviewing the tape. TNT’s Darren Pang even suggested that he originally thought the goal was Vasilevskiy’s. Tampa fans threw their hats during the next intermission of the game when Point’s name was announced.

However, the Capitals were somehow able to get past Lindgren’s miscue, getting goals from John Carlson and Tom Wilson late to win 5-4.

After the game, Jakob Chychrun awarded Lindgren the team’s gold chain as player of the game.

“This guy, first NHL tuck tonight,” Chychrun joked.

Lindgren later spoke to reporters afterwards and spoke through the fork.

“It was obviously the worst mistake I’ve ever made in my life as far as on-ice (mistakes),” Lindgren said. “I know better than that. I can’t go backwards there. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

He then credited his teammates: “We were down then, 4-3. We could have, if we weren’t a close team, we could have been frustrated and kind of wrapped it up, sent it in. And I knew there wasn’t no chance. This team is too good for guys in the locker room. Honestly, it was a pretty sweet win.”
