The Virginia Tech Hokies and South Carolina Gamecocks meet Wednesday in college basketball action from Suncoast Credit Union Arena. Here is a South Carolina vs Virginia Tech prediction. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best South Carolina vs. Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

The Hokies got off to a good start this year, picking up wins in their first three games over Delaware State, USC Upstate and Winthrop. However, it has been three straight losses since then as Virginia Tech has fallen to Penn State, Jacksonville and Michigan.

In the Wolverines game on Monday, the Hokies went into halftime with a 34-33 deficit. Virginia Tech ended up not closing the gap in a 75-63 final loss. Toibu Lawal posted 14 points to lead the team in the losing effort and Jaydon Young added 12 points.

South Carolina Gamecocks Betting Preview

On the South Carolina side, they snapped a 2-1 run in their first trio with a loss to North Florida before wins over SC State and Towson. However, it’s been a 1-2 stretch in the last three with a win over Mercer sandwiched between losses to Indiana and Xavier.

In their matchup with Xavier on Monday, the Gamecocks held a five-point edge in the second half. However, South Carolina was outscored 46-32 from there and lost 75-66. Collin Murray-Boyles led the way with 13 points with six rebounds in the losing effort.

  • South Carolina has won each of its last four Atlantic Coast Conference games at neutral sites.
  • South Carolina has won the first half in 20 of its last 22 games against non-conference opponents.

Why the Virginia Tech Hokies will win

  • Virginia Tech has won the first half in 16 of its last 18 Wednesday games against non-conference opponents.

South Carolina vs Virginia Tech Prediction

I’m leaning towards South Carolina here. The Gamecocks opened well against a terrific Xavier team in their last outing, but ended up shooting a tepid 42.6 percent from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range along with a 41-31 rebound – deficit and 12 turnovers. That said, South Carolina has only really lost one “winnable” game (the opener against North Florida) and they haven’t really been blown out except for the 87-71 loss to Indiana. The Gamecocks are better than their record might indicate.

As for Virginia Tech, they shot just 34.5 percent from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range along with 19 turnovers in their last matchup with Michigan. The Hokies have been under 65 points in four straight games (a 1-3 stretch) and have given up 74 or more points in each of the last three. If the Gamecocks can sustain any kind of offense here, the cover should be within reach.
