‘Moana 2’ heads for record $170M Thanksgiving weekend

The worst thing a studio can do on a big weekend like this is over-project. And if there’s one thing about Thanksgiving forecasts, they’re always over-projected.

Right now Disney’s Moana 2 draws up an estimate $54 million first day, including Tuesday’s Walt Disney Animation preview record $13.8M. This will coast the sequel to Dwayne Johnson-Auli’i Cravalho to at least $170 million at 4,200 theaters, easily a Thanksgiving 5-day box office opening that outstrips Disney’s own Frozen ($93.9M), as well as a film with the biggest haul over the holiday stretch, topping Frozen 2 ($125 million).
