11/27/24: Rain and snow for Thanksgiving

Latest forecast update from meteorologists Steve Caporizzo & Rob Lindenmuth:

A quiet afternoon today ahead of a storm system that will move in late tonight and will be with us all day on Thanksgiving. Hopefully you were able to get to where you need to be for the holidays, travel will be difficult, especially Thursday afternoon as a wintry mix will be possible for all with all the snow in elevations above 1,000 feet.

Snow and a wintry mix will arrive between 2-4 Thursday morning. Will likely remain a wintry mix in the valleys into the late morning or early afternoon before changing to all snow. There may be a period where it switches back and forth, this will be a heavy wet snow. It will remain all snow at elevations above 1,000 feet and things will taper off between 6-8pm.

The storm right now is in the middle of the country and will tap into the Atlantic moisture, so while it doesn’t look like much right now, it will be much more consolidated overnight tonight and into Thursday.

On Thursday morning, wet snow starts in the mountains with a wintry mix in the valley. Temperatures will be in the 30s and will likely drop in the afternoon as precipitation increases in intensity.

As mentioned above, the temperatures in the valley during the afternoon will be borderline and we will likely see the rain and snow tumbling back and forth. But in the late afternoon and early evening should it get cold enough to transition to all snow, that’s when the Hudson Valley could see their accumulations.

Just east of the Hudson River will see the least amount of snow thanks to some shade and temperatures maybe just a tad too warm for any snow to stick, a 2″ coating at best there. 2-4″ for Albany west into the Berkshires and Taconics, 4-8″ further west into the northern Berkshires and southern Vermont, there will be some areas of 8″-12″ through the high places of Schoharie County and the northern Berkshires and the ridge of the Green Mountains. North and West of Albany will be the “Jackpot Winners” especially if we see band setup in the storm where there will be local enhancement which could lead to over 12″ of snowfall.

We’ll dry things out by the end of the week and into the weekend with temperatures cooling down into the 30s over the weekend. Early next week there will be a chance for snow showers and temperatures will be much cooler with highs in the upper 20s and low 30s. Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! – Cap & Rob
