Teenage hockey player Colin Brown dies days after being shot on I-55 in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – Colin Brown, a teenage hockey player who was shot Saturday night on Interstate 55 in St. Louis, died Wednesday morning from his injuries.

Colin Brown was hit by a stray bullet around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 55 near Loughborough Avenue as his family was driving home from one of his hockey games.

After Colin was shot, his father continued to drive to the area of South 4th and Walnut streets where he was met by police and EMS. Emergency responders then rushed Colin to a hospital, where he was in critical condition for several days before he died.

Colin was 16 years old and a student from Christian Brother College High School in St. Louis County. His family is asking for privacy at this time, according to an update from St. Louis police on Wednesday.

Mitch McCoy, a spokesman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, says some of Colin’s organs were donated to other patients in need.

“This donation exemplifies the type of young man Colin was and the type of family he grew up in,” McCoy said. “Their steadfast commitment to serving the people around him should inspire us all.”

Community support has been strong for Colin over the past few days as CBC High School, St. Louis Blues and several youth hockey organizations have kept him in their thoughts. Dawg Nation Hockey Foundation, a non-profit organization, provides a three-for-one match for every dollar donated to Colin’s family, up to a maximum of $2,500.

Meanwhile, St. Louis homicide detectives followed up on several tips since Monday. The police have received new video and are in the process of reviewing it for relevant information in connection with the case.

Police are asking anyone who lives near I-55 and Loughborough Avenue to review their security cameras between 10:30-45 p.m. starting Saturday, Nov. 23 for anything suspicious that can help officers investigate.

“No tip or piece of information is too small,” McCoy said. “We need everything right now. We don’t know what little piece of information could crack this case.”

Police have not yet released any potential suspect information in connection with the shooting that led to Colin’s death.

“This kind of disregard for human life will not be tolerated in this city or this region,” McCoy said.
