While “Wicked” may defy gravity, the studio responsible for the musical blockbuster had to clarify that there was nothing wrong with how its stars were paid.

Universal Pictures released a statement obtained by USA TODAY on Tuesday clarifying that “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were paid the same amount for their work on the film.

The studio issued the statement as rumors on social media about a large pay gap between the two began to swirl.

“Reports of salary disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on Internet fodder,” the statement read. “The women were paid equally for their work on ‘Wicked’.”

The company did not disclose how much the couple was paid in the settlement.

‘Wicked’ has six-figure opening weekend

The first installment of the film adaptation of the stage musical based on the book by Gregory McGuire topped the global box office in its opening weekend, grossing $164.2 million, of which $114 million came from North American theaters.

It was the biggest opening weekend for a movie based on a Broadway musical ahead of the global debut of Universal’s 2012 release “Les Miserables,” according to the studio.

The second act of the film will hit theaters in 2025.
