Live Updates: Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire comes into effect in Lebanon, war in Gaza

Hezbollah began firing near-daily rockets into Israeli territory a day after Hamas attacked Israel October 7killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, sparking the ongoing devastating war in Gaza.

Hassan Nasrallah, then head of Hezbollah, vowed to continue shooting at Israel until it stopped its attack in Gaza. Exchanges of fire between Israel and the militant group that has reclaimed Iran occurred regularly thereafter, in skirmishes that sparked fears the fighting would spill over into a wider regional conflict.

On September 16Israel’s war cabinet expanded its stated war aims to include the return of displaced residents in the north of the country, where Hezbollah rocket fire has displaced more than 60,000 Israelis.

Hours later, Israel detonated thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members, killing dozens and wounding hundreds. It was followed by an attack on the group’s walkie-talkies the next day.

On 23 SeptemberIsrael launched a sweeping offensive against Shia-majority areas across the country where Hezbollah has significant influence, killing over 500 people in Lebanon’s deadliest day since its civil war that ended in 1990.

On September 27Israel killed Hezbollah’s longtime leader Nasrallah in a massive attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut, upending ceasefire talks. A series of subsequent attacks decimated the group’s top leader and sent the organization even deeper underground.

Israeli attacks continued to hit large parts of the country, mainly the Shia-majority south, east and the southern suburbs of Beirut known as Dahiyeh, killing more than 3,700 people.

And Hezbollah continued to fire rockets at Israel, with some of the projectiles striking over 70 miles into the country. The vast majority of its missiles and drones were intercepted by Israel’s air defense systems, but some caused damage. Since October 2023, Hezbollah attacks on Israel have killed 47 Israeli civilians and 31 security forces in Israel. Another 46 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Lebanon.

On the 26th of NovemberIsrael and Lebanon agreed to an agreement to end the conflict with Hezbollah, which took effect early the following morning.
