The police target one more, after the demonstration blocked traffic in the center

Ottawa police charged and arrested another person after last week’s demonstration that blocked traffic in downtown Ottawa.

Officials said pro-Palestine demonstration that took place on November 18 resulted in more charges that night, but out of caution the officers did not continue to arrest people despite seeing some “committing offences”.

The group had gathered on Elgin Street at about 5:00 p.m. and was told by members of the Police Liaison Team (PLT) “several times” that the demonstration should remain on the sidewalk.

“These activities included obstructing the police, mischief, instructing others to commit offenses and repeated noise offences,” reads a press release.

According to officers, a 20-minute delay followed, with protesters taking over part of the intersection of Elgin Street and Nepean Street, blocking the parking garage in Ottawa.

“Despite repeated orders from the police and dialogue with PLT members at the site, the protesters remained and interactions between police and protesters began,” officials said.

It was assessed that it could be “an escalation” if the police continued to make arrests.

Almost a week later, a 29-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the demonstration. She was charged with Public Mischief X2, Obstructing Police, Attorney, an Indictable Misdemeanor and Unlawful Assembly.

She is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

“We acknowledge the concerns that members of the community have raised regarding these arrests,” police said. “OPS is committed to ensuring community safety and respecting the lawful right to protest. All charges related to demonstrations are carefully considered with this balance, and we are focused on balancing the need for public safety with promoting trust and understanding.”

Officials are continuing the investigation.
