A heads up on the tricky parts

DISCOUNT is a verb.

PLAZA and RITZ could be the names of two hotels, but they don’t go together today. (Only PLAZA refers to the hotel.)

There is no wildlife category today, despite words like ANIMAL, PUG, TURTLE and GOLDFISH.

What are the categories in today’s Connections?

DOUBLE BEWARE: SOLUTION IS BELOW

Ready to learn the answers to today’s Connections puzzle? I’m giving them all away below.

What are the yellow words in today’s Connections?

The yellow grouping is considered the most straightforward. The theme for today’s yellow group is GOOD THINGS TO COME TO WORK and the words are: BONUS, EQUITY, PROMOTION, RAISE.

What are the green words in today’s Connections?

The green grouping is supposed to be the second easiest. The theme for today’s green category is DISREGARD and the words are: DISCOUNT, FORGET, IGNORE, IGNORE.

What are the blue words in today’s Connections?

The blue grouping is the second most difficult. The theme for today’s blue category is KINDS OF CRACKERS and the words are: ANIMALS, CLUB, GOLDFISH, RITZ.

What are the purple words in today’s Connections?

The purple grouping is considered the most difficult. The theme for today’s purple category is FEATURES IN “ELOISE” and the words are: ELOISE, PLAZA, PUG, TURTLE.

This is how I solved today’s Connections

I think RAISE, PROMOTION, EQUITY and BONUS could all be words that relate to job perks.

PLAZA and RITZ are two smart hotel brands. Other? Hmm.

DISCOUNT, IGNORE, FORGET, and OVERVIEW are all verbs that mean not to stand for something.

ELOISE is a children’s book character. Maybe there are other characters from that book on the board? I’ll have to do some googling. Oh, she lives at the PLAZA and has two pets: a PUG and a TURTLE! Let’s try them.

That leaves CLUB, RITZ, ANIMAL and GOLDFISH. Ah, it’s all kinds of crackers.

How to play Connections

I have a full one guide to playing Connectionsbut here’s a refresher on the rules:

First find the Connections game on the New York Times website or in theirs Game app (formerly the Crossword app). You will see a game board with 16 tiles, each with a word or phrase. Your task is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (eg: RAIN, SLEE, HAIL and SNOW are all types of wet weather), but sometimes there is pun involved (eg BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list and so on).

Select four items and press the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple). If your guess was wrong, you get a chance to try again.

You win when you have correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed.

How to win connections

The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be difficult. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle appeared to include six breakfast dishes: BACON, EGGS, PANCAKES, OMELET, WAFFLES, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come in dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don’t hit “send” until you’ve confirmed that your group of four includes only the four things.

If you’re stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that appear to have no connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting with the nickname “Whistler’s Mother,” you might be on to something. When I solved that, I ended up googling if there was a painter named Close, because Close didn’t fit any of the obvious themes either.

Another way to win when you’re stuck is of course to read a few helpful tips – that’s why we share these tips every day. Come back tomorrow for the next puzzle!
