Holiday mayhem in Chicago: Teen reunions, shooting near Macy’s disrupts festivities

Violence marred the kickoff to Chicago’s holiday season as hundreds of thousands packed downtown this weekend for festivities.

Chaos broke out in several locations shortly after the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival on Saturday.

Around 9 p.m., Chicago police surrounded the Macy’s on State Street after a 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg while walking nearby, authorities said.

Witnesses told FOX 32 the victim came into the store bleeding near a makeup counter and asked for someone to call her boyfriend.

The incident unfolded when a group of at least 100 teenagers rushed into the store and reportedly took cover from gunfire outside. The shooting happened just three minutes before Macy’s was scheduled to close.

It came amid a chaotic weekend of teen gatherings downtown, with video from Chitown Crime Chasers showing large crowds and several fights breaking out in the Loop, including along Michigan Avenue, Washington Street and State Street.

The victim was in good condition Sunday. Police will announce any arrests from the teen incidents on Monday.
