Woman shot near State Street Macy’s after holiday lights parade ends

DOWNTOWN – A 19-year-old woman was shot near the Macy’s on State Street as several holiday events were wrapping up Saturday, according to authorities.

The woman was walking with a group on the sidewalk in the first block of Washington Street just before 9 p.m. Saturday when a man fired shots in their direction, police said. She was hit in her right leg and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.

The shooting took place after the annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival and Parade had finished a few blocks north. The event includes a parade down Michigan Avenue before a fireworks display on the Chicago River, which began at 6 p.m. 19:15 Saturday.

The attack also took place during the first weekend of Christkindlmarket, the Christmas-themed fare that takes over Daley Plaza just west of Macy’s. The market closes at 21 Saturdays, right around the time of the Washington Street shooting.

People at the Christkindlmarket ducked for cover when shots rang out, according to CBS Chicagowhose studio is adjacent to Daley Plaza. Others ducked into businesses or doorways to take cover, the station reported.

Another person was hospitalized after the shooting for a medical emergency that was likely a panic attack, CBS 2 reported.
